[ Only Scott could make him regret implanting him with an emergency beacon. But the promise that Midnighter would always be there for anyone who calls forces him to answer. ]

What's wrong?

[ It's for emergencies, so he keeps up that farce. They both know differently, though. ]

[ Scott smiles slightly, walks over and wraps one hand firmly in Mid's shirt. ]

You tell me.

[ The big relaxing breath he takes in when Scott touches him is telling. He's easy like Scott always tells him, no matter how pathologically Midnighter denies it.

The words, "I'm just dandy," are waiting on his tongue, but it's an insult to them both. It only makes him look stupid, doesn't it? So instead he says nothing where he sits looking up at Scott. A calculated decision in a strange battle. ]

[ Only said after a bit of a pause to see if Mid is going to find something to say. ]

[ Damn. What a counter attack. He may be an open book about his achievements, his triumphs, his strengths, the things that make him weird and interesting to a normal man, but not what truly hurts him and makes him weak. ]

I hate myself.

[ It's not quite an admission. Almost a revelation, or a question for a man that knows him well. ]

[ Gentle, but steady and still holding onto Mid, physically. ]

[ It's clear Scott's answer is not what Midnighter expects. His light eyes narrow slightly, pupils flitting back and forth like a computer spitting out line after line of code for analysis. ]

And to care enough to find it worth avoiding fucking up the same way twice.

[ It's something he is sure Apollo would have said to him. Heroes are so disgustingly cute. ]

God, if I didn't love you so much, I'd be tempted to slug you for being such a boy scout. You're like the poster boy for hero best practices.

[ Midnighter's hand closes around the one Scott still has fisted in his shirt. ]

[ He kisses Midnighter, briefly. ]

[ Another kiss. ]

[ Then he puts a hand on the back of Midnighter's neck and does kiss him. Properly this time, no pulling back. Teeth and tongue and intensity. ]

[ His chuckle grows louder with every new peck to his lips. But when Scott gets serious, it turns into a moan. Midnighter opens up to him, inviting him in until he's caught within his arms and legs.

And then that familiar light of Midnighter's opens up behind. They fall through the Door and onto their bed. He stops only briefly to get a few choice words out. ]

So, I'm thinking you should fuck me. Any feedback on that?

[ It's a three bedroom house. Scott doesn't even bother trying to figure out which bed they just fell into. It doesn't matter to him. What does is him sitting up across Mid's hips to peel his own shirt off. ]

Yeah. That you'd better have lube and be prepared to deal with some vanilla sex for once in your life.

Believe it or not, most of my sex back home was vanilla. It's reliable comfort food.

[ Midnighter's hands immediately settle against the man's washboard abs, one finger circling his navel and following the trail of dark hair down his belly. ]
