For Sandy, showing how far from human he really was now meant... a lot. It was easy to hide under the hat, behind the mask. It was easy to just be the Sandman, to live in Wesley's shadow, with his sleep gas and his wirepoon gun. It was easy to pretend he hadn't been changed irrevocably and turned into something that confused even him sometimes.
If anyone ever thought he was showing off and was stupid enough to say so out loud, it was very likely they'd get a sock to the jaw.
